Edmonia Lewis (Wildfire) the African Native American Sculptor
AAtum ArtsEdmonia Lewis (known as "Wildfire") was an American sculptor who gained prominence in the 19th century. She was born around 1844 in Greenbush, New York, and was of African American and Native American descent. Lewis faced significant challenges due to her identity as a woman of color in a predominantly white and male-dominated society. Despite these obstacles, Lewis achieved international recognition for her neoclassical marble sculptures, which often depicted themes from mythology and her own cultural heritage. One of her most famous works is "The Death of Cleopatra," completed in 1876, which garnered critical acclaim and established her as a leading sculptor of her time. Lewis faced discrimination and prejudice throughout her career, both as a woman and as a person of color. However, she persevered and found success in Europe, particularly in Rome, where she lived and worked for much of her life. She became the first African American sculptor to achieve international fame. Today, Lewis is celebrated for her artistic talent and her pioneering role as a woman of color in the art world. Her work is displayed in museums and galleries around the world, and she is recognized as an important figure in American art history. -- My channel "Atum" on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4GrfTi1FYF87_wJnPxaSyA My email miladsidky1969@gmail.com Donation via PayPal if you see my content worth watching https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/miladsidkyatum -- Credits MUSIC Aztec Empire - Jimena Contreras (1844-1907) -- Photos and vids https://pixabay.com/photos/palette-paints-oil-painting-1482678/ https://pixabay.com/illustrations/tree-pen-universe-write-stars-5831258/ https://pixabay.com/illustrations/wave-painting-drawing-artistic-81840/ https://pixabay.com/videos/black-abstract-background-lines-18327/ https://pixabay.com/illustrations/tree-pen-universe-write-stars-5831258/ - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edmonia_Lewis_by_Henry_Rocher_(cropped).jpg Columbus https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:%27Columbus%27_by_Edmonia_Lewis,_marble,_c._1865-7,_High_Museum_of_Art.JPG Hiawatha's Marriage https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hiawatha%27s_Marriage_by_Edmonia_Lewis,_1871,_marble_-_Cincinnati_Art_Museum_-_DSC04532.JPG Indian Combat https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Indian_Combat,_carved_1868,_by_Edmonia_Lewis_-_view_2_-_Cleveland_Museum_of_Art_-_DSC08936.JPG https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Indian_Combat,_carved_1868,_by_Edmonia_Lewis_-_view_1_-_Cleveland_Museum_of_Art_-_DSC08934.JPG Poor Cupid https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edmonia_Lewis_-_Poor_Cupid.jpg The Death of Cleopatra https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Death_of_Cleopatra.JPG Hagar https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edmonia_Lewis_-_Hagar.jpg Moses (after Michelangelo) https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edmonia_Lewis_-_Moses_(after_Michangelo).jpg Old Arrow Maker https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edmonia_Lewis_-_Old_Arrow_Maker.jpg Forever Free https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Forever_Free_by_Edmonia_Lewis_(1867).png https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Forever_Free_by_Edmonia_Lewis_-_The_Met,_2022.jpg Fuzheado, CC BY-SA 4.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 --60 views 6 comments -
