Creative, talented people do not use drugs to give themselves inspiration. To ‘receive’ musical inspiration needs the person to be able to perceive ‘inner sounds’. Sounds that are not heard with the ears. Thus a musician will use techniques where peace and quiet can be obtained or produced. In contrast those in the visual arts – film/movies, videos, painting, sculpture and computer games need to shut their eyes to ‘imagine’ – receive - pictures. And once one has one’s eyes closed , a method is needed to ensure the pictures stay in one’s memory/perceptions. Hypnagogia is the transitional state of consciousness between being awake and being asleep. Salvador Dali used this method. But this form of inspiration is often short and better suited to paintings, inventions and flashes of blue sky insight. Film producers and video makers need more prolonged moving images. All mammals, all birds, and many reptiles, amphibians, and fish sleep. Many dream – dogs for example, dream. There are two types of dream: • Ordinary dream – in which one only remembers the dream once you have woken up • Lucid dream – in which you become ‘conscious’ in the dream and are thus able to both direct and remember the dream And in this video we examine the ordinary dream. Ordinary dreams are used to help the body repair itself. This is achieved in deep sleep. Needless to say without this deep sleep the body has no chance of ever repairing itself, or of fighting disease. Ordinary sleep also enables the mind to reorganise itself. If these "mind management" tasks are not completed successfully you can end up dog tired, confused and mentally weary. During mind management our memory is reorganised, we learn from accumulated perceptions, old unused memories get "archived", and the data in memory gets reorganised and reindexed. But Rapid eye movement sleep, or REM sleep, accounts for 20–25% of total sleep time in most human adults. The right hemisphere becomes highly active during REM sleep. Ask most people who invented the first working sewing machine and they might take a guess and say Isaac Singer, but they would be wrong. Because that person was Elias Howe. And Elias Howe invented the first practical working sewing machine using the solution shown him in a dream. Elias Howe’s invention is still used in the sewing machine’s design. Before the sewing machine, women made all clothes by hand and each garment was by its very nature unique. The sewing machine liberated women from this work, bringing in the mass production of clothes. It revolutionised the clothing industry, the fashion industry and the way clothes are sold. Without Elias Howe there would be no Nike, no Gap, no Banana Republic, no Calvin Klein, but there again, there would be no sweat shops either.
