Guns Around Town Documentary Series The Lone Sailor Memorial San Francisco CA, While I was visiting California last fall, I made a trip to San Francisco to check out the town. On my way out, I made sure to check out a statue by the artist Stanley Bleifeld, THE LONE SAILOR. There are 15 of these memorials around the world, the first being stationed at the Navy Memorial in Washington D.C. The Memorial stands on a vista on the north side of the Golden Gate Bridge, When I got to the memorial I came up on the back side of the memorial looking toward the bridge, The Sailor stands at the center of a Compass rose, in the middle of a circular deck made from different shades of Granite. The perimeter is marked with 4 ships lanterns and plaques depicting 4 service branches that sailed from the bay during World War II. Each of these has a breathtakingly detailed plaque honoring them. A Plaque at the site commemorates the memorial saying the following., The Lone Sailor This is a memorial to everyone who ever sailed out the Golden Gate in the service of their Country – in the Navy, the Marine Corps, the Coast Guard, the Merchant Marine. A ship heading for sea passes directly by this spot at the northern end of the Golden Gate. Here the Sailor feels the first long roll of the sea, the beginning of the endless horizon that leads to the far Pacific. There is one last chance to look back at the city of San Francisco, shining on its hills, one last chance to look back at the coastline of the United States, one last chance to look back at home. Thousands and thousands of American seafarers have sailed past this place, in peace and war, to defend this Country and its sea frontiers. Many of them never returned. This monument is dedicated to the ordinary Sailors and Marines who sailed from this place and did their duty. This memorial, was funded as far as I could determine, by private funds. It is in a beautiful location. The site is easy to navigate and there are plenty of facilities if you are traveling and need to make the stop. I would say it is worth it.
