The Story Behind the Harvard Management Company in 1974 With One of the Founders, George Siguler!
FamilyOfficeThe Story Behind the Harvard Management Company in 1974 With One of the Founders, George Siguler! Mr. Siguler was a Founder of the Harvard Management Company in the early 1970s, and initiated and managed its venture capital, buyout and hedge fund activity. In other words he’s instrumental in creating the endowment model of investing as we know it today. The Harvard Endowment dates back to 1638. Today the endowment is a staggering $55 billion. That’s larger than the GDP of more than 120 nations — and all the money is tax free. From the 1640s to the mid-20th century, the endowment was managed conservatively and over much of the prior hundred years until the formation of the Harvard Management Company only invested in public stocks and fixed-income investments. Some of the Questions I ask George (who would go on to become one of the most successful investors ever… that’ll be for my part II interview with George!) include: - Why not the status quo, what led to the then unheard of focus on venture capital, buyout, risk-arb and hedge funds? - Share with us the impetus to change led by then Harvard President Cabot and Harvard Treasurer Putnam? - You proposed a new model of investing focused on alts what was your thesis? - What was the process back then for sourcing alternative managers (pre-consultancies)? - How has endowment investing changed over the past 50 years? - How did you navigate the balance between preserving the endowment's principal and generating income for current needs? - What strategies can institutions employ to grow their endowments over time? - Are there any emerging trends or best practices in endowment management that institutions should be aware of? - How do economic fluctuations and market volatility impact endowment performance, and how can institutions mitigate risks in a rising interest rate environment? - In your opinion, what are the most significant challenges facing endowment asset management today, and how can they be addressed?14 views -
How to Incorporate Next-Gen Across the Enterprise!
FamilyOfficeOne of the most crucial considerations for families of wealth is "How to Incorporate Next-Gen Across the Enterprise." This is a topic of immense importance, and to explore it deeply, I’m excited to welcome an exceptional guest, Susan R. Schoenfeld, CEO of Wealth Legacy Advisors. With her extensive experience and unparalleled expertise, Susan has guided families through this intricate process for decades. In our discussion, we’ll dive into: * The intricate details of incorporating the next generation into various aspects of the family enterprise, including the family business, family office, and philanthropy. * The importance of developing a strong internal purpose and leadership, and how these elements contribute to the family culture—along with common pitfalls. * The question of when to begin involving younger family members, and why there may be no such thing as "too young." * The dangers of relying on financial wealth alone as the glue that holds a family together, and why purpose is essential for lasting family unity and happiness. * How entitlement in children can lead to compensatory behaviors that fill a purpose-gap, denying them a meaningful life. * The lost art of courage and the necessity of developing resilience in the face of challenges. * The importance of teaching critical thinking and nurturing the capacity and capability to lead. * The most essential skills for fostering multi-generational resilience. * Why preparing the next generation is ultimately more valuable than merely protecting them. * The paradox that the greatest threat to the family often comes from within, yet this can also be the family’s greatest strength. * How positive affirmations, when earned at a young age, can build a foundation for success. * Recognizing the tipping point where governance can turn into hierarchy and bureaucracy. * Navigating the complexities of blended families. Incorporating the next generation across the enterprise is a critical endeavor, and we will be focusing on this topic with a series of content and resources from late summer through the fall. Join us for this vital dialogue and discover the keys to multi-generational family continuity. #familyoffice #angelorobles#familyofficetv27 views -
