In America, everyone has an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity as long as they are determined, work hard, and show initiative. America is the land of opportunity. It’s where anyone with enough hard work and dedication can make a better life for themselves and their children. This is the American dream. But is this lifestyle obtainable for the average American today? Or is the American dream dead? There’s no doubt about it: America has fallen on tough times. Necessities such as groceries, utilities, and gas are unaffordable for the average American, and people are starting to notice. As long as I can remember, people have always blamed violence in video games, movies, TV shows, and books – art – on society’s biggest problems. For example, after the tragedy in Columbine happened in 1999, everyone blamed the computer game Doom, a first-person shooter where you go around killing aliens. In the three-plus decades that I’ve been alive, society’s technological capability has changed dramatically. With social media platforms and video platforms like YouTube, news can travel around the world in seconds, something that wasn’t possible just 15, or 20 years ago. With the help of smartphones and search engines like Google, we now have instantaneous access to all the information that we could ever need in the palm of our hands, yet, we aren’t any smarter.
