Weekend Box Office Results: Across the Spider-Verse Scores Second-Biggest Opening of the Year
The animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse may be the lowest grossing Spider-Man film (or Spider-Man-adjacent film, like the Venoms) since 2002, but it is also the one holding the Oscar. Not only that, but it holds the highest rating with critics on the Tomatometer, Certified Fresh at 97%, and its reputation has certainly been elevated in the years since its release in 2018. This weekend, its sequel opened with one of the longest running times ever for an animated film at 140 minutes. But it also saw one of the biggest sequel bumps ever as well. King of the Crop:...
King of the Crop: Across the Spider-Verse Scores Second-Biggest Opening of 2023 Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse opened to the second-best Thursday “preview” ever for an animated film with $17.35 million. Only Incredibles 2 did better with $18.5 million. (The Super Mario Bros. Movie opened on a Wednesday and did not have previews.) That $17 million is folded into what became the best opening day of 2023 with $51.7 million, beating Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s $48.1 million. (Again, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has the best Friday of the year with $54.8 million, its third day of release.) Spider-Man’s Thursday and Friday led to a opening weekend of $120.5 million for the Spider-Verse, putting it in league with some of the most boosted sequel events we have seen in the past 40 years. The 2018 film opened in December to just $35.3 million and went on to gross $190.2 million. That is a 341% increase from the first film. Taking out of the equation follow-ups that built anticipation over a decade or more, like Top Gun: Maverick and Hannibal, here are some of the highest increases we have ever seen after word-of-mouth and discovery took over. Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (475.17%) Scream 2 (418.15%) Pitch Perfect 2 (366.21%) Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (341.35%) The Matrix Reloaded (230.26%) The Dark Knight (224.98%) Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (212.04%) A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (209.92%) Die Hard 2 (206.03%) Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (205.05%) Elm Street 3 was more the result of a much wider release than a lot of fan love for Freddy’s Revenge at the time, and Pitch Perfect 2’s percentile is based off the original’s wide expansion in its second week. (The first film initially opened to $5.1 million in 335 theaters.) That is still an impressive list to be a part of. Other 200% sequel increases include Crocodile Dundee II and Rambo: First Blood Part II (also both the result of massive theater increases for their sequels) as well as Insidious: Chapter Two. $113 million also bests DC’s Wonder Woman as the highest opening ever for the first weekend in June. Worth noting that the only film since 2016 to open over $100 million in its first three days and not get itself to $300 million was this year’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Across the Spider-Verse is not going to have that kind word-of-mouth, and it feels like it could stay No. 1 for a second weekend, even with the new Transformers film debuting next week. The Top 10 and Beyond: Fast X Drops Hard, New Releases Fail to Impress Last week’s No. 1, The Little Mermaid , has been having a positive week after some cautious signs in its estimate decline its first few days. With $40.6 million this weekend, the live-action remake is over $186 million and continues to pace closely (for the time being) with 2019’s Aladdin, which had a $42.8 million second weekend and a $185.5 million 10-day haul. Anything above $20 million next week will keep it on a $300+ million pace. Anything below and it may find itself closer to The Matrix Reloaded’s pace, which saw that film end up just over $280 million domestic. It is Mermaid’s international total that has to be more concerning to Disney. At just $78.9 million entering the wee...

TAGGED AS: Drama, movies (Photo by Fox/ courtesy Everett Collection) Big celebrates its 35th anniversary! After making a literal Splash for his leading movie-star debut, nice guy Tom Hanks would become the king of yuppie ’80s slapstick, starring in classics like Bigand fan favorites such as Joe Versus the Volcano, The ‘Burbs, and The Money Pit. Tuned-in audiences up to that point knew him primarily from the two-season ABC sitcom Bosom Buddies, and justas Hanks’ obvious talent couldn’t be contained to television, it was likewise apparent he wouldn’t always be stuck doing “just” comedies.
1992’s A League of Their Own established Hanks as an ally for women and sports, and set up a grand slam in 1993. Sleepless in Seattle fashioned Hanks and Meg Ryan as a rom-com dream team, while Philadelphia represented his first foray into drama, leading straight into a Best Actor Oscar win. More importantly, it gave a harrowing, human face to the AIDS epidemic that American society at large had struggled – or refused – to fully comprehend at that point; during his Oscar acceptance speech, he referenced mentors and peers who were gay and who had influenced his life.
The following year, Hanks picked up a consecutive Best Actor Oscar for boomer nostalgia blockbuster Forrest Gump, which would also take Best Picture. With his career in official sky’s-the-limit mode, Hanks went exactly there, blasting off into space for Apollo 13 in 1995. That same year, he voiced Woody in the groundbreaking Toy Story, a role he has returned to over the decades and into the present. Saving Private Ryan in 1998 marked the first time Hanks would work with Steven Spielberg, a fruitful creative partnership that has produced an abundance of critically acclaimed films, including Catch Me If You Can, Bridge of Spies, and The Post. Also, The Terminal.
In recent years, much of Hanks’ acclaim and accolades has been directed at his biopics. Think Captain Phillips, Saving Mr. Banks, Sully, and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. His latest film were Greyhound, a WWII naval thriller that he co-wrote, News of the World, and Elvis. Want to know if your favorite television series is among the latest cancelled TV shows? Bookmark this page to learn about Netflix cancelled shows, when network series get the axe, and which cable TV limited series are being reworked as anthologies to squeeze every single drop of fan love out of them. How it works: Renewals are obvious: new season = yay! When a network or streaming service announces that they’re not making another season of a show, however, we count that as cancelled (or “canceled” if you spell it without SEO considerations). Sure, some shows “come to a natural end,” but someone somewhere said “enough,” and to avoid endless discussions about whether a title was “cancelled” or “retired” — Westworld and The Man Who Fell to Earth were cancelled, but The Flash and The Handmaid’s Tale get to come to their natural conclusions — we’re going with the one designation. We’ve also included series that have completed their latest seasons but have not officially been cancelled or given a renewal (see: The Terror and Russian Doll ).
Feel free to debate specific titles in the comments. But first: learn which series will live on, which were renewed and then cancelled (thanks, COVID-19 and media conglomerate mergers), and which have simply reached their expiration date. Related: 2023 Premiere Dates HBO has given a third season to Somebody Somewhere, Bridget Everett’s comedy-drama whose second season became a Sunday night palette-cleanser for the dark humor of the cable channel’s Emmy-winning programming Barry and Succession. The heartfelt and realistic series is co-created by Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen and stars comedian-singer Everett as Sam, a woman who returns to her small town in Kansas despite after spending her youth trying to escape it. She finds a support system of friends and family who help her deal with loss and acceptance. Matilda De Angelis stars in Prime Video’s Citadel: Diana. (Photo by Amazon Studios) Prime Video has renewed its splashy espionage thriller Citadel for a second season, which will be titled Citadel: Diana and star The Undoing actress Matilda De Angelis . Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas starred in the first season of the globe-trotting adventure about a covert spy ring that has a mole (or moles?) in the operation. The Russo brothers executive produce the series with Joe Russo committing to direct all episodes of the second season. Executive producer David Weil is also returning as showrunner. The Winchesters is cancelled by The CW. (Photo by The CW) Much like what happens with its supposed core demographic of young adults, The CW is going through some growing pains. Last year saw the departure of chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz, the man associated with bringing in the broadcast network’s robust line of superhero programming and ushering it away from teen soaps like Gossip Girl. Now The CW’s entertainment president, Brad Schwartz, said during a recent press call that superhero shows “had their time” on the channel.
It’s true that The CW stalwarts like The Flash and Riverdale, which are both based on comic book characters, are ending their long runs. But the network has also cancelled other series like Walker Independence, a spin-off of its popular Walker, Texas Ranger reboot, and The Winchesters, a spin-off to its long-running and hugely popular Supernatural series. Kung Fu, a modern-day (and more progressive) version of the David Carradine series Kung Fu: The Legend Continues, was also cancelled.
Upcoming The CW programming include Joan, which stars Sophie Turner as jewel thief Joan Hannington, and The Librarians: The Next Chapter, a spin-off the TNT series that starred Rebecca Romijn and Christian Kane. It will also air new seasons of crime drama 61st Street and reality dating series FBoy Island after those shows were dropped by other services.

After three Certified Fresh seasons, it looks like an end (of sorts) has come for the comedy Ted Lasso. The comedy’s stars have offered mixed messages on whether season 3 was the last, and Apple TV+ hasn’t made an official call.
In any case, it’s all good friends, because with shows about football — both soccer and the other kind — plus all the heartfelt comedies you can handle, we’ve huddled up a perfect list of titles you should check out if you love Ted Lasso. And if you like biscuits, just watch The Great British Baking Show on Netflix. Brand-New Pick - - Angel City (HBO) This three-part docuseries from HBO showcases the L.A.–based professional women’s soccer team, Angel City, that was co-founded by Oscar winner Natalie Portman in 2020 — proving that stars like Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney aren’t the only ones who can be in the soccer biz.
This one not only tells the story of how they started a franchise from scratch and became the largest majority female ownership group in pro sports, but also lets us in on the drama with players and coaches on and off the field.
Portman has said that she was inspired by her son’s love of the Women’s World Cup, and she felt compelled to contribute to some of the cultural changes happening in women’s sports.
And it’s her involvement in the soccer club and the series — she’s also an executive producer — that has early reviews looking very positive.
If you’re kicking around the idea of giving this one a shot, all you’ll need is Max — formerly known as HBO Max — and a few hours of free time Where to Watch: Max Audience Pick 53% The English Game (Netflix) This historical miniseries is also about soccer players, only this one takes us back to the 1870s and basically tells the story of how soccer — aka football — came to be in England. The English Game was developed by Julian Fellowes, who created Downton Abbey, and includes plenty of real people as characters and real events, but of course with the drama amped up a bit.
This one has a high audience score at 84%, but critics didn’t think it scored any goals. But the consensus from critics does point out that the show’s “love of the game is likely to elicit a rise out of fans.”
But please no rioting!
It’ll take you just under five hours to watch this one on Netflix, and then go ahead and give yourself some college credits for taking a history class too. Where to Watch: Netflix Under-the-Radar Pick 100% Detectorists (Acorn TV) This comedy has a heartfelt side too — much like Ted Lasso — and comes from creator Mackenzie Crook, who also stars alongside Toby Jones.
The pair play friends who share a passion for metal detecting, and experience the greed, betrayal and other drama that goes along with trying to land that one big score that will turn them into detecting legends.
Along with three 100% Fresh seasons on the Tomatometer — one of which is Certified Fresh — Detectorists has unearthed multiple awards and plenty of praise all around. And critics say the show’s “pleasant hilarity is a wealth of emotional riches.”
New life goal: be pleasantly hilarious.
You’ll need about 10 hours to discover and dig up this show, after which you’re totally going to price out metal detectors on Amazon. Where to Watch: by subscription on Acorn TV buy on Prime Video, Apple TV+ Throwback Pick 97% Friday Night Lights (NBC) With stars like Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton leading the way, this hit series focuses on the small town of Dillon, Texas, where winning football championships is the top priority.
Inspired by a book and subsequent film and developed by Peter Berg, the show was also known for its great young cast members, helping launch the careers of future stars like Michael B. Jordan, Jurnee Smollett, Taylor Kitsch, and Jes...

DWAYNE JOHNSON TO STAR IN ANOTHER FAST AND FURIOUS SPIN-OFF (Photo by Giles Keyte/Universal Pictures)
In 2019, the Fast and Furious franchise expanded into a “cinematic universe” with the release of Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw (Fresh at 68%), starring Idris Elba, Helen Mirren, and, as the title characters, Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. Now, as the core franchise is ending its finale with the upcoming 11th film (following this year’s Fast X , which opened just a couple of weeks ago), Universal Pictures and Dwayne Johnson have announced that he will be returning as Luke Hobbs in another spin-off film. The untitled movie will serve as a bridge, narratively, between Fast X and the 11th film in what The Hollywood Reporter is calling Fast X.5. There is no word yet about whether Jason Statham will also return as Deckard Shaw, but Johnson is already hinting that Jason Momoa will be reprising his Fast X role as Dante Reyes. There is not yet a release date for the second Hobbs movie or the also recently announced all-female Fast Furious spin-off, but the first will probably be in 2024 or 2025. 2. SONY PLANNING LIVE-ACTION MILES MORALES MOVIE AND MORE (Photo by Columbia Pictures)
This week, in the days before the release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Certified Fresh at 96%), a few different key people have been talking about possible future Spider-related movies besides next year’s Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse (3/29/2024). First up was producer Amy Pascal, who confirmed that Sony is developing both a live-action Miles Morales movie and an animated spin-off film for Spider-Woman. Hailee Steinfeld, who voices the Gwen Stacy version of Spider-Woman, also voiced her excitement for her own movie, calling it her “dream job.” Finally, there are also plans for Tom Holland to return for a Spider-Man 4, as he said this week that he had had “meetings,” but that they are currently on hold in solidarity with the WGA strike. 3. MARTIN SCORSESE TO MAKE ANOTHER FILM ABOUT JESUS (Photo by Universal Pictures)
Last Saturday, Pope Francis made an appeal to poets and artists, and acclaimed filmmaker Martin Scorsese replied with plans for another movie about Jesus; in 1988, Scorsese released The Last Temptation of Christ (Certified Fresh at 82%), starring Willem Dafoe, which famously courted controversy. It’s not yet clear if Scorsese’s new Jesus film will be a documentary or a dramatic feature film, but frequent collaborator Robert De Niro is already being asked about whether or not he will participate. 4. INSIDIOUS FRANCHISE TO CONTINUE WITH KUMAIL NANJIANI AND MANDY MOORE (Photo by Frazer Harrison, Kevin Winter/Getty Images)
Although there have been more movies in The Conjuring Universe, 2010’s Insidious (Fresh at 66%) is also racking up its own franchise, with a sixth film now in the works. The film will be titled Thread: An Insidious Tale, and the two leads will be Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani, who will play a married couple who use a magic spell to travel back in time to prevent the death of their daughter. 5. TERRIFIER 3 TO GET A BUDGET 10 TIMES HIGHER THAN TERRIFIER 2 (Photo by Bloody Disgusting)
One of the most surprising box office hits of 2022 was the super gory Terrifier 2 (Certified Fresh at 85%), a crowdfunded sequel to the even lower budget horror film Terrifier (Rotten at 5...

TOP STORY Succession, Barry, Ted Lasso More of the Week’s Finales Ranked Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Alexander Skarsgård, Nicholas Braun, and Matthew Macfadyen in the Succession series finale (Photo by HBO) We saw some epic TV and streaming finales this past week. Several high-profile shows came to a definitive end — Succession, Barry, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel each went out with a satisfying bang — while others closed out their most recent seasons — Yellowjackets ended its sophomore run with a 70% score on its finale, and FX’s Dave enlisted the help of Brad Pitt for its final season 3 episode. And Apple TV+’s soccer-comedy darling Ted Lassosaid “So Long, Farewell” with a 67% finale score and lingering questions about its small-screen future.
Here’s a ranking of how the past week’s big series finales fared by their Tomatometer scores: Matthew Macfadyen and Sarah Snook in the Succession series finale (Photo by HBO) 100% Succession, Season 4, Episode 10: "With Open Eyes" The series finale achieved a perfect score on the Tomatometer with 34 reviews, which continues the 100%-score run of finales following season 2’s “This Is Not for Tears” and season 3’s “All the Bells Say.”
Each of the series’ four seasons is Certified Fresh. Season 1 has an 89% score, while seasons 2–4 all have 97% scores, which is quite a coincidence, considering that Succession is a series with enough episode-level reviews to generate episodic scores, which impact the season-level score.
Shirly Yi of The Atlantic wrote of the series finale: “An equal parts hilarious, repulsive, and sensational end to one of the most enthralling series of our era.” (Photo by Philippe Antonello/Prime Video) 100% The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Season 5, Episode 9: "Four Minutes" Prime Video’s prestige dramedy series wrapped up its five-season run with a perfect 100% score for its finale on five total reviews. The season 4 finale, “How Do You Get to Carnegie Hall,” also received a perfect score on five reviews.
Each of the show’s five seasons is Certified Fresh with season 1 scoring 94%, season 2 at 92%, season 3 at 79%, season 4 at 92%, and season 5 at 97%.
“It was a super-sized finale with plenty of excitement, heartbreaking moments, and, as always, laughs,” wrote Mary Littlejohn of TV Fanatic . (Photo by HBO) 82% Barry, Season 4, Episode 8: "Wow" Bill Hader’s Emmy-winning dark comedy met its bloody end on Sunday. With 11 total reviews, the program’s final episode, season 4’s eighth entitled “Wow,” garnered a Certified Fresh 82% score on the Tomatometer. By comparison, the season 3 finale, “Starting Now” received a 100% score with eight reviews submitted.
The show’s seasons have the following Certified Fresh scores: season 1 at 98%, season 2 at 100%, season 3 at 99%, and season 4 at 95%.
“There is so much greatness in the finale, just as there has been in Barry as a whole, but it’s an oddly muted way to go out,” wrote Alan Sepinwall of Rolling Stone . (Photo by Apple TV+) 69% Ted Lasso, Season 3, Episode 12: "So Long, Farewell" Is this the end of Ted Lasso or could there be a spin-off (or two) coming? These are the questions still lingering after the season 3 finale (and possible series finale) premiered on Wednesday. As of the publishing date of this article, the episode received a 67% score on the Tomatometer on 12 reviews.

What to Watch This Week: Across the Spider-Verse, The Boogeyman, and More

Joining the highly anticipated return of the animated Spider-Man is another kind of Man, but much more spooky; plus, we have a romantic date night option, a sketch comedy show that critics adore, and a season finale from one the most biscuit-centric comedies on TV. 96% Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) Swinging into theaters is the highly anticipated sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse . Five years have passed since the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse became somewhat of a surprise hit, racking up a Certified Fresh 97% on the Tomatometer, and this time we’re happy — and much less surprised — to report that Across the Spider-Verse is also Certified Fresh, currently at 95% on the Tomatometer, which forecasts good vibes for the inevitable third installment Beyond the Spider-Verse , due out next year.
Another reason to hurry up and see this one is that Miles Morales — aka Spider-Man — will be venturing out, as this film will showcase at least six spider-verses, each with its own distinct look. Think the world of 2099 in one dimension and the 1970s Japanese Spider-Man show in another.
Of course, with all that comes new Spider-Heroes too, and joining returning stars Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, and Jake Johnson will be names like Issa Rae, Daniel Kaluuya, and Oscar Isaac, whose Spider-Man 2099 had a brief cameo at the end of the first movie and is playing a larger part in this one. Where to Watch: In theaters 63% The Boogeyman (2023) Also creeping into theaters is the supernatural horror flick The Boogeyman . Yes, we get a horror movie in June. This one is about a terrifying entity that preys on the suffering of a family who just lost their mother/wife, and it’s based on Stephen King’s 1973 short story of the same name. That right there may very well be reason enough to check this one out.
But it’s also worth noting that this creeper was written for the screen by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods — who wrote A Quiet Place — and Mark Heyman, who wrote Black Swan . We call that qualified for the job.
The Boogeyman is currently at a respectable 62% on the Tomatometer with almost 100 reviews, and critics say that while it may not live up to the source material, it’s got a spooky atmosphere and some solid performances. Plus, you know, we get a horror movie in June! Where to Watch: In theaters 96% Past Lives (2023) Another theatrical option this week comes by way of the romantic drama Past Lives . This film is about two childhood friends who reunite as adults for one fateful week, when they explore ideas of destiny and love in what has been described as a heart-wrenching modern romance. Along with its intriguing premise, another reason to look at Past Lives is that it stars Greta Lee, who has had a steady career but recently broke through by stealing her scenes in Apple TV+’s The Morning Show , and now she’s getting a much-deserved starring role.
The film is the directorial debut of Celine Song, which is made all the more impressive by the fact that it’s currently Certified Fresh at 96% on the Tomatometer with an audience score at 91%. In other words, it’s good, and you should definitely give it a chance. Where to Watch: In theaters 92% I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson: Season 3 (2023) A strong streaming option for this week is season 3 of I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson . This sketch comedy series was co-created by and stars actor Tim Robinson, who began with the premise that each segment would depict a scenario in which things get so out of hand that it drives a character to leave (or at least want to leave). From there, it blossomed into one of the most original cringe comedy series we’ve seen in a long while.
Robinson was previously a writer on SNL and that connection remains, with plenty...

TAGGED AS: blockbusters, movies, Superheroes
Once again, we have a unanimous pick as the most anticipated movie of the month, but this time around, the runner-up was also a unanimous No. 2 across all of our social media polls. After that, a pair of blockbuster sequels tied for the third spot, and two more films tied for the fourth, though they trailed far behind the rest of the pack in terms of votes. Read on for the most anticipated movies opening in June 2023! Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) #1 on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube Release Date: June 2 Back in late 2018, the animatedSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse took the world by storm, earning near universal acclaim from both critics and audiences en route to an Oscar win for Best Animated Film and, thanks to its fresh and inventive art style, arguably changing the genre forever. So it’s no surprise that its follow-up,Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, ranks at the top of everyone’s list asthe movie to see in June. And even though it’s only the first half of a two-part story (with the second half set to open next year), it has already gotten a similar reception to the first from those who have seen it, currently sitting at a Certified Fresh 95% on the Tomatometer and an equally impressive 95% Audience Score. The Flash (2023) #2 on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube Release Date: June 16 Not far behind Spider-Man, we have the latest entry in the DC Universe — which, we should note, is getting a complete overhaul in the near future. That said,The Flash offers DC’s own multiversal adventure, complete with the requisite nostalgic fan service, and while we don’t have any reviews for it yet (check back with us on June 6 for those), the buzz around the film thus far has been overwhelmingly positive, and it quite unsurprisingly took the No. 2 spot this month with a unanimous vote, so look for this one to make a big splash when it opens in the middle of the month. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023) #3 on Instagram and Twitter, #4 on Facebook and YouTube Release Date: June 30 While the two big superhero movies easily took No. 1 and 2 this month, two more blockbusters tied for the third position. We’ll start withIndiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which comes a decade and a half after the last installment (the somewhat divisive Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) and finds Harrison Ford’s adventuring archaeology professor entering the Space Race of the 1960s. The film held its world premiere at Cannes last month, where it earned underwhelming reviews, but it’s hard to discount the enthusiasm of longtime fans who just can’t wait to see Indy crack that whip one last time. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023) #3 on Facebook and YouTube, #4 on Instagram and Twitter Release Date: June 9 The second film tying for the third position is another big franchise entry, though this one is technically a prequel. Following in the footsteps of 2018’sBumblebee, which jumped backwards to the 1980s and ended up earning the best reviews of the Transformers series,Rise of the Beasts sets its action in the 1990s and introduces characters from theBeast Wars storyline. Hopes are high that this one will be as enjoyable as its predecessor, and considering it doesn’t have any competition during its opening weekend, it certainly looks like the other studios are expecting Paramount to have another winner, at least at the box office. Elemental (2023) #5 on Instagram and Youtube Release Date: June 16 There wasn’t nearly as much love for any of the films outside of the top four, but two movies did earn enough votes to tie for the final spot this month, even if they lagged far behind the rest. The first is Pi...

In a weekend filled with comic conventions, odd announcements about Daredevil, and a late appearance by The Matrix Resurrections , a surprise trailer took the Internet by storm in early December 2021: the first look at Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse . Granted, there was some warning on from producer Christopher Miller, but it still proved to be a gift in a month already filled with geeky presents like the other Spider-Man movie – the live action Spider-Man: No Way Home . Across the Spider-Verse’s teaser turned out to be a pleasant surprise. For one thing, it finally offered a title for a film previously known only as “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2.” Of course, no film gets produced in a vacuum, and there are plenty of other things we know about the project already, especially as Sony further clarified some things across various other presentation in 2022. So let’s take a look at what we know so far about Spider-Man: Across the Universe. [Updated 4/4/23] Across The Story (Photo by Marvel Entertainment)
The plot of Across the Spider-Verse is still up for debate, but the name, the teaser, and the CinemaCon presentation certainly offer some clues. For one, it’s clear Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) will be going on an adventure to other realities instead of the problem dropping into his dimension — six realities to be exact, per Miller and his producer partner Phil Lord during the presentation. The actual footage seen in the teaser backs this up, with the second half offering a very stylized take on interdimensional travel.
The first half of the preview suggests a few things as well. For one: Miles is grounded. Presumably, he is in over his head again. We’re going to guess the problem occurred at school since Miles tells Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld) that his dorm at Visions Academy is much cooler than his childhood room. Gwen, meanwhile, is the star of the film’s opening minutes according to various accounts of footage screened at CinemaCon and subsequent presentations. She is seen battling the Vulture in her home dimension (Earth-65), but soon encounters Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac), who tells her the Vulture’s chaos came about because she left a portal between universes open after the events of Into the Spider-Verse. The pair also encounter a very pregnant Jessica Drew — aka Spider-Woman. (Photo by Sony Pictures)
Reports also say Miles will be re-introduced in the sequel during a meeting of his parents with his guidance counselor that does not go well — something we see in the April trailer. This may contribute to why he’s home when Gwen reappears in the teaser. She soon convinces him to go out and about as Spider-Man, but his reticence to do so may be based in that scene with the counselor. No matter the issues in Miles’ life, Gwen takes him to a place where other Spider-Men from different universes gather — the concept of Spider-Man 2099.
There, he will reunite with Peter B. Parker and meet the likes Spider-Woman and Supaidaman (aka Japanese Spider-Man). The latter character is based on the late 1970s Spider-Man television series from Japan. In that program, a man named Takuya Yamashiro acquires spider-like powers, a costume, and a transforming robot from an alien. Yamashiro’s mission: defeat Professor Monster and the evil Iron Cross Army. The character is said to be part of the film and we can’t wait to see how all of its out-there ideas get conformed to Spider-Verse proportions. Considering the references to Spider-Man: No Way Home in the April trailer, it’s easy to imagine the jokes arising from the curious case of the Japanese Spider-Man.
But as the trailer also reveals, Spider-Man 2099 has little interest in seeing Miles join his league of Spider-folk. The issue: he always choses the needs of the few over the many. And it seems this will bring Mi...

The series finale, “With Open Eyes,” drew a series high audience of 2.9 million viewers and spawned a thousand columns about how faithfully it sticks to the plot of Shakespeare’s King Lear, in which Lear’s three daughters die and the eldest’s spouse shares the kingdom with an outsider; recounting how it is possibly related to baseball player Bill Wambsganss’ 1920 historical feat (first unassisted triple play in the World Series); and coining the adjective “Wambsgansian,” where the Machiavellian-like scheming is less malevolently cunning and more servile and bumbling.
Created by Jesse Armstrong, the Emmy-winning HBO Original drama explores power and family dynamics between patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox) and his four children, Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Siobhan (Sarah Snook), Roman (Kieran Culkin), and Connor (Alan Ruck). Every season of the series is Certified Fresh with a series-average score of 95% on the Tomatometer.

Wendy, who has been in her position longer than Chuck has been in his, refuses to give up her career for her husband’s legal crusade against Axelrod. It has also, perhaps most importantly, been a platform to tell stories that have made gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, queer, intersex, and more people feel less alone in the world – to know there is a big and varied community to which they belong. One pioneering show at a time, groundbreaking character by groundbreaking character, TV and streaming series have given the world an insight into the LGBTQ+ experience, and provided LGBTQ+ people with reflections of their own lives – stories to laugh along with, to cry with, and to identify with. In this list of LGBTQ+ TV shows, we highlight 180 shows that have broken ground, enlightened, and entertained. We’ve arranged the list into four categories: shows that were big TV firsts, or featured TV firsts; shows that center on LGTBQ characters or experiences; shows that feature LGBTQ+ characters and stories, but where that isn’t necessarily the primary focus or thrust of the series; and reality shows and docuseries. As with al l lists like this, there will be titles we’ve missed, and you may disagree with some of our categorizations; we encourage you share your thoughts and add your favorites in the comments, so when we do an update, we can have even more great LGBTQ+ titles to consider. Favorite LGBTQ+ TV Shows Groundbreakers and Big Firsts Shows That Center on the LGBTQ+ Experience Shows With LGBTQ+ Characters and Storylines Reality Shows and Docuseries In many ways, nearly all of the series on this list could be called “trailblazers,” “pioneers,” and recognized for their contribution to furthering fuller LGBTQ+ representation on TV and in streaming. But the titles in this first section stand out for breaking boundaries and crossing major milestones. They did so by being the first network superhero TV show with an LGBTQ+ lead (actress and character), as is the case of the CW’sBatwoman, or featuring some of the earliest recurring gay characters on American TV, like Vincent Schiavelli’s Peter Panama on the short-livedThe Corner Bar, orBilly Crystal’s Jodie Dallas onSoap. In this section you’ll also find the first Disney Channel show to feature a gay main character (Andi Mack), the first animated show to feature a same-sex marriage proposal (Steven Universe), andPose, which broke ground with its diverse, largely transgender cast, and for being the series on which Janet Mock became the first transgender woman of color to direct and write an episode of television. [More] Adjusted Score: 83780% Critics Consensus: Though it needs more time to develop its own identity to truly soar, Batwoman's fun and stylish first season is a step in the right direction for representation and superhero shows alike. In honor of Pride, Rotten Tomatoes is highlighting LGBTQIA+ voices, and as part of the celebration, we’re spotlighting actors, activists, and storytellers of queer and trans experiences. In each of their respective roles, the following actors and storytellers offer trans, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming communities the chance to see ourselves not just reflected and represented, but in command of an audience. They show us that queer existence is as powerful as it is commonplace. They’re changing Hollywood, redefining authenticity and originality one role at a time.
By portraying characters of varied gender expressions, these actors and performers both honor the queer trailblazers before them and inspire generations to come. They entertain us while offering opportunities to see ourselves in an industry long known for perpetuating divisions of race, gender, and sexuality.
What does it mean to be trans or nonbinary and an actor in Hollywood? Whether portraying a mother of dragons, an engineer of artificial intelligence, a teen trying to survive in the wilderness, or a babysitter looking for their life’s purpose, the following trans and nonbinary rising stars are redefining and defying the gender binary onscreen. Bella Ramsey 96% The Last of Us (Photo by Liane Hentscher/HBO)
At just 19, Bella Ramsey has become a thriving breakout star leaving a trail of memorable roles in their midst in a short amount of time. Earning praise for their portrayal of the young yet fierce Lyanna Mormont on Game of Thrones , Ramsey quickly became synonymous with strong, independent, and outspoken characters.
More recently, Ramsey can be seen playing the hardheaded and sharp-witted Ellie in The Last of Us . As a nonbinary actor, Ramsey has stated: “Playing these more feminine characters is a chance to be something so opposite to myself, and it’s really fun.” Bilal Baig 100% Sort Of (Photo by Courtesy of HBO Max)
Approaching gender and sexuality in an earnest, messy, and heartwarming way, Bilal Baig highlights the wonderfully complex potential of what it means to write what you know. Their spellbinding MAX series Sort Of tells the story of Sabi, a babysitter seeking purpose in life — and ultimately themselves. In writing and portraying Sabi, Baig’s work feels so unfiltered that the lines between character and creator start to blur.
Inspiring and reflective of the ever-fluid state of self, Baig’s exploration serves as a universal call for self-acceptance and understanding. Dua Saleh 95% Sex Education (Photo by Sam Taylor / Netflix / Courtesy Everett Collection)
Dua Saleh is a Sudanese-American actor, musician, and performer. Before becoming a recording artist and actor, Saleh was involved in grassroots organizations and studied systemic inequality at Augsburg University in Minnesota. Since 2019, they’ve released three EPs, citing Sister Rosetta Tharpe (a queer icon and the mother of rock and roll) as well as Arab and Sudanese music as heavy influences on their RB stylings.
In season 3 of Netflix’s Sex Education , Dua portrays Cal, a nonbinary student who defies their British private school’s aesthetic and social expectations while challenging their peers to question each others’ assumptions about gender and sexuality. Emma D’Arcy 88% Game of Thrones (Photo by Ollie Upton / HBO)
To play a woman on the verge of inheriting a kingdom is no easy feat, yet Emma D’Arcy has given themselves over to the role of Rhaenyra Targaryen completely, filling our screens with sublime angst in every episode. Within the demands of the character, D’Arcy shows that one’s personal identity doesn’t infringe on the character they portray – in fact, the caliber of this role and its performance are mutually enhanced.
D’Arcy is a leading...

TAGGED AS: best, Countdown, Film, LGBT, LGBTQ, movies (Photo by A24) Our list of the 200 Best LGBTQ+ Movies of All Time stretches back 90 years to the pioneering German film, Mädchen in Uniform , which was subsequently banned by the Nazis, and crosses multiple continents, cultures, and genres. There are broad American comedies ( The Birdcage ), artful Korean crime dramas ( The Handmaiden ), groundbreaking indies (Tangerine), and landmark documentaries ( Paris Is Burning ). Over the last few years, we added titles like the documentary Welcome to Chechnya , about LGBTQ+ activists risking their lives for the cause in Russia; Certified Fresh comedy Shiva, Baby ; and Netflix’s The Old Guard , a rare movie about super beings that showed a same-sex relationship between two of its heroes.
Culled from a longlist of hundreds, movies considered for the list prominently feature gay, lesbian, trans, or queer characters; concern itself centrally with LGBTQ+ themes; present its LGBTQ+ characters in a fair and realistic light; and/or be seen as a touchpoint in the evolution of queer cinema. Every movie here is Fresh, from at least 20 reviews. They’re ranked by Tomatometer, with Certified Fresh films first. And we recognize that some of the films in the list will re-ignite healthy debates that have been fixtures of discussion around LGBTQ+ films — straight actors playing gay characters, cis actors playing trans characters, and the historical dominance of white male perspectives. We’d encourage those debates to continue, respectfully, in the comments section below. (And speaking of comments: yes, we know that But I’m a Cheerleader is missing — we love it too! — but it’s Rotten.) For our most recent update to the list, we’ve added mainstream comedies Fire Island and Bros , thriller Knock at the Cabin (featuring two pairs of husbands whose vacation is interrupted by the potential apocalypse), Disney feature Strange World (with the studio’s first openly gay lead character), Blue Jean (a British drama set during the Thatcher premiership), the extremely well-reviewed Girl Picture ), and Cannes 2023 debuts Monster and Strange Way of Life .
For now, join us as we celebrate the work of hundreds of filmmakers whose talents and risks have opened up the possibilities of cinema. Best LGBTQ+ Movies 1-100 101-200 #1 Adjusted Score: 104103% Critics Consensus: An illuminating and urgent call to action, Welcome to Chechnya portrays the horrors of the mass persecution of the LGBTQ+ community in the Chechen Republic with tenacity and tenderness. (Photo by Alabama Forum, Atlanta Barb, Southern Voice, and OUT Front Magazine) In honor of Pride, Rotten Tomatoes is highlighting LGBTQIA+ voices, and a s part of the celebration, we ’re spotlighting some of the work our Archival Curation team has been doing to bring more LGBTQIA+ publications onto the Tomatometer. Pride is cause for celebration; it reflects joy, authenticity, fluidity, and community. Pride is rooted in political organizing and resisting attempts to diminish , silence , or erase us. Pride says: “We’re queer all year; always have been and always will be.” Pride should honor the multitudes of LGBTQIA+ experiences and resilience.
In a year (series of years, really) marked by unprecedented legislative attacks on the LGBTQIA+ community – particularly trans and nonbinary folks – it feels especially important not just to revel in our joy and remember our roots, but to recognize that we have existed forever, even (and especially) in places that are or have historically been hostile to us. Since 2020, the Rotten Tomatoes Archival Curation team has sought to find queer outlets in the archives – to learn and amplify what LGBTQIA+ critics have been saying about movies and television since the industry’s inception. Last year’s spotlighted publications included Drag , which centered on drag ball culture and trans+ civil rights; Women in the Life , a periodical produced by Black queer women and femmes; Vice Versa , the earliest known lesbian newsletter in America; and The Advocate , the oldest still-active queer outlet in the country.
Despite efforts to erase queer (as well as Black and Brown) history from schools, to shut down drag, and to limit access to gender-affirming healthcare that saves our lives, LGBTQIA+ communities have always existed in every corner of the United States and the globe. The following American regional publications, especially those from southern and midwestern cities, are evidence that queer people have always been everywhere – cultivating community, creating records of and for ourselves, and doing what cinephiles everywhere love to do: debating, writing, and talking about the movies. (Photo by 5th Freedom) 5th Freedom (1970-1983) – Buffalo, NY Much of queer culture and history is created by local organizers, often in response to attempts to quash or eradicate the LGBTQIA+ community. Perhaps the best-known example of this is the Stonewall Riots, which are now honored yearly with Pride marches, but other similar events took place across the country in the same era, such as at The Black Cat Tavern in Los Angeles in 1967 and the Tiki Bar in Buffalo. In response to police efforts to shut down LGBTQIA+ spaces in Buffalo, local queer organizers rallied to create the Mattachine Society of the Niagara Frontier, which protested police harassment and created 5th Freedom. 5th Freedom was published biweekly beginning in 1970 through the 1980s, and it covered grassroots organizing as well as the AIDS epidemic in Buffalo and across the nation. The periodical was named for the “five essential freedoms” outlined in Come Out!, a publication created by the Gay Liberation Front: freedom from want, freedom from fear, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and freedom to love. 56% Making Love (1981) Fresh: “Even if it’s a flop among general audiences, Making Love is going to have an impact on many closeted gays… It presents, perhaps unintentionally, some fairly probing issues to the gay man watching the film.” — Rod Hensel, February 1982 32% Funny Lady (1975) Rotten: “I dig Barbara as much as everybody else does, but I cannot tell a lie. I can’t say her latest movie colossus, ineptly titled Funny Lady (being neither funny nor ladylike), is great or good or even fair. It’s just plain awful and ther...

When Disney distributed Pixar’s Toy Story as an autumn alternative to traditional 2D animated features in 1995, could the studio have predicted that it would instead set the gold standard and template for theatrical cartoons for decades to come? After all, the slide from peak Disney Renaissance had only just begun (their releases that year were Pocahontas and A Goofy Movie ) and Pixarwas up to that pointa studio that only made commercials and shorts; a feature-length 3D animated movie was a miracle in of itself, and they were not equipped to churn out quality yearly releases like Walt Disney Animation.
Pixar’s follow-up took three years to hit theaters, and though A Bug’s Life is looked back on in the canon as a minor Pixar effort, everyone in 1998 rushed out to see it, and it again ended up grossing more than Disney’s then recent works like Hercules and Mulan . 1999’s Toy Story 2 was a cultural event, and established Pixar as the one to take animation to the highest heights in the new century. What followed was a then-unprecedented run of Certified Fresh hits and box office smashes, from Monsters, Inc.andFinding Nemo to The Incredibles,WALL-E, andUp.
2011’s Cars 2 broke the streak with Pixar’s first Rotten film, and the studio has since spent the past decade oscillating between returning to the sequel well (Monsters University, Finding Dory) and pulling up original property (Coco, Inside Out), closing out with Toy Story 4. For 2020, Onward was pulled from theaters after two due to the pandemic, while Soul went straight to Disney+ in hopes of salvaging a year of chaos. Luca and Turning Red continue to expand the breadth and color of their stories. Spider-Man swung into theaters in 2002, cementing Marvel Comics as a viable player in the superhero movie arena, which had been dominated by DC with Superman and Batman. Spider-Man swung into theaters in 2002, cementing Marvel Comics as a viable player in the superhero movie arena, which had been dominated by DC with Superman and Batman. And though 2000’s X-Men felt the need to modernize its team, Spider-Man fully embraced its classical roots, down to the iconic outfit. That’s because director Sam Raimi was a lifelong fan who fully knew how to navigate and celebrate Spidey, from the relatable morality at the core of Peter Parker (played by Tobey Maguire) and the shattering death of his Uncle Ben, to his stormy relationship with Mary Jane and those workplace shenanigans with hard-ass newspaper boss J. Jonah Jameson, and finally Parker’s iconic battle with the Green Goblin, whose son just happens to be Peter’s best friend.
Spider-Man arguably fights the greatest rogues gallery in all of Marveldom, and they certainly got their due on-screen in the Raimi trilogy. Doctor Octopus gets his tentacles all over Spider-Man 2, while Sandman, Venom, and junior Goblin stack the cast in Spider-Man 3. Though a box office hit like the others, Spider-Man 3‘stepid critical and fan response was enough to kill the momentum on continuing the series.
In 2012, Spider-Man was rebooted with The Amazing Spider-Man, with Andrew Garfield as Parker. The film sought to bring in the pre-Mary Jane flame, Gwen Stacy, and pitted Spider-Man against another classic villain, The Lizard, as director Marc Webb developed a more realistic portrayal of Peter’s world, as opposed to Raimi’s comic-book overtone. The second Amazing Spider-Man fell for the too-many-villains trap (we had Electro, Green Goblin, and Rhino), and the franchise shut down again.
With the Marvel Cinematic Universe in full motion, Marvel Studios was able to negotiate a deal with Sony, which holds the theatrical rights to Spider-Man, to get the character to jump to the MCU. Thus, Tom Holland made his debut in 2016 for the centerpiece battle in Captain America: Civil War, before starring in his own celebrated film, Spider-Man: Homecoming one year later.
It’s been good times for Spidey fans ever since, with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (the animated blockbuster that brings Miles Morales into the fold), Spider-Man: Far From Home, and No Way Home. Even his bad guys have reason to celebrate: Critics may not have loved 2018’s Venom, but audiences sure did. And Tom Hardy clearly does as well, as he returned as Eddie Brock for Venom: Let There Be Carnage. In 2022, we arrived at the meme-spawning Morbius, and for 2023, now we’re putting in more Miles for the hotly-anticipated Across the Spider-Verse .

Barbie: Release Date, Trailer, Cast & More
Does Barbie’s Dream House have a movie theater? It better, because how else is she going to be able to watch the blockbuster film adaptation of the world’s most famous doll? Barbie, the iconic doll that first hit toy stores way back in 1959, is getting her very own live-action movie. It’s hardly the first toy to get the film treatment (see: Transformers, LEGOS, G.I. Joe, and more), but the upcoming Barbie movie feels like it could be something special — or at the very least, extremely interesting. Barbie boasts an incredible cast and an acclaimed director, and though we haven’t heard too many specifics about the plot, what little we do know seems like it has the potential to be buck wild. Here’s everything we know about Barbie. Who Is Directing Barbie? (Photo by Rick Rowell/Getty Images) Greta Gerwig, the writer Oscar-nominated director of Lady Bird and 2019’s celebrated Little Women remake, signed on to write the Barbie movie in 2019 along with her partner, Marriage Story writer-director Noah Baumbach. In July of last year, however, Variety confirmed that Gerwig would also be directing the film. Barbie is a bit outside the norm for Gerwig and Baumbach. Gerwig, who is also an actress, is best known for her quirky and insightful comedy-dramas. Baumbach tends to make highly mannered and somewhat dry films like The Squid and the Whale . Neither’s filmography necessarily screams “the obvious person to make a movie about a famous toy.” But, that’s perhaps what makes Barbie so intriguing. Who’s In It? (Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures) Margot Robbie, best known for her role in Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood and for playing Harley Quinn in three DC superhero movies, signed on to play the title role way back in July 2019. Robbie is also producing the film through her production company LuckyChap Entertainment, with Mattel Films and HeyDay Films co-producing.
For a while, Robbie was the only star confirmed for the movie, but what would Barbie be without Ken? In October 2021, Ryan Gosling was announced as the live-action Ken opposite Robbie. Gosling has previously starred in films like Blade Runner 2049 and Drive , but he’s also done lighter fare like La La Land and Crazy Stupid Love , so it seems rather clear which of his past performances will be the most relevant to his portrayal of Ken.
Robbie and Gosling are not the only big names in the movie, however. In fact, the list of big names in the film is honestly kind of absurd. According to some gossip that New York Times journalist Kyle Buchannan heard at the Cannes Film Festival, there are going to be multiple Barbies and Kens in the film. Insecure star Issa Rae and Hari Nef, the trans actress and model who starred in Transparent , will reportedly both play Barbies, too. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu and Ncuti Gatwa, who was recently announced as the 14th Doctor in the upcoming Doctor Who season, will be alternate Kens. There are a ton of additional actors playing as-yet unknown roles. A-list comedians Kate McKinnon, Will Ferrell, and Michael Cera will all be in Barbie in some capacity. Emma Mackey, the Death on the Nile star who is frequently said to resemble Margot Robbie, will appear alongside her doppelganger in Barbie. America Ferrara, Ariana Greenblatt, Alexandra Shipp, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Rhea Perlman, Sharon Rooney, Scott Evans, Ana Cruz Kayne, Connor Swindells, Ritu Arya, and Jamie Demetriou also are slated to appear in the movie. Emerald Fennell, writer-director of 2020’s Promising Young Woman , has a role as well.
