Theresa Depasquale | Success Story Podcast
We're drowning in content. Everywhere, every second. So, what makes certain posts stand out?
Entertainment is the hook. It draws people in. But the entertainment alone is fleeting.
Enter Education. Once you've got their attention, offer substance. Genuine value keeps them around.
Then there's Inspiration. It's the catalyst that turns passive viewers into active participants.
Let’s break it down:
• People initially go to social media for a break, a laugh.
• Then, while they're there, they're open to learning.
• But what makes them engage, share, or follow? It's the content that resonates, motivates.
Consider platforms like TED Talks. It's not just about information; it's about the presentation. Engaging, but informative.
The key? Blend, don't balance. Your content shouldn’t swing between extremes. Integrate all three elements.
Avoid the fluff. Focus on substance, but make it accessible. And always leave your audience with something to think about, to aspire to.
In an overcrowded digital space, infotainment isn't an option; it's a necessity. Use it wisely, and watch your engagement soar.

Why You Can't Learn From Your Mistakes (Hindsight Bias)
➡️ Like The Podcast? Leave A Rating: https://ratethispodcast.com/successstory
In this Lessons episode, we dissect the intriguing concept of "Hindsight Bias" — the tendency to believe, after an event has occurred, that we would have predicted or expected it. This cognitive distortion affects various aspects of our lives, from personal decisions to societal judgments. Let's unravel the facets of hindsight bias and discover ways to counteract its pitfalls.
• The Hindsight Illusion: A dive into the story of a failed relationship that exemplifies how we reimagine past events to fit our present understanding.
• Historical Recognitions: Even ancient philosophers like Seneca, Confucius, and teachings from Buddhism touched upon the essence of hindsight bias without naming it.
• Societal Implications: Hindsight bias isn't just personal; it affects our legal system, business strategies, and societal narratives. Its influence is pervasive, from investors regretting not choosing the "obvious" stock to doctors feeling a diagnosis should have been clearer.
• Countering Hindsight Bias: Strategies ranging from envisioning multiple histories, embracing a beginner's mindset, focusing on the decision-making process, reframing disappointments, documenting thoughts, seeking diverse perspectives, to rigorously assessing decisions based on processes and not just outcomes.
• The Hindsight Horizon: A concept that captures how far we can objectively see into the past. Emphasizes the role of habits, behaviors, and practices that can either obscure or clarify our hindsight vision.

• Demand Creation: Highlighting a common roadblock for small businesses, Stacy discusses the art of creating demand in a saturated market. She recommends researching competitors and understanding users' needs to design a unique offering.
• Bridging Passion and Paycheck: Stacy touches upon the challenging phase where entrepreneurs often juggle their startup with a regular job. She advocates for a strategic approach, ensuring that the business is proven and established before taking the full-time plunge.
• The Art of Differentiation: Stacy concludes the conversation with the golden rule of standing out in a saturated market. Drawing from the Blue Ocean Strategy, she insists on the importance of being distinct, urging businesses to tap into uncharted territories without entirely neglecting established demand zones.

Seth Godin | Success Story Podcast
In the modern business landscape, metrics matter. Revenue, growth, market share - we're inundated with numbers.
But what if we're measuring the wrong things?
The real question should be: Did your business make an impact today? Not just in profits, but in lives.
Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived - that is to have succeeded."
Consider Apple. Yes, they sold billions of devices. But their real success? Changing our relationship with technology.
Tesla? More than cars, they shifted the narrative on sustainable transport.
But change isn't always monumental. Sometimes, it’s in the details.
Imagine owning a café. At the end of every day, you play a nostalgic tune. One evening, a customer shares how that song brought back precious memories. That moment, right there, is a metric of success.
Impact.
Did you make someone's day better? Did you solve a small but significant problem? Did you perform an unexpected act of kindness?
Business today is about depth, not breadth.
Forget casting a wide net. Focus on deep, meaningful interactions. Sure, maybe it's just for a handful of customers, but their loyalty and word-of-mouth can far outvalue any advertising campaign.
Chasing the masses? That’s old news. Now, it’s about improving individual experiences.
So, for businesses aiming for real success:
Ditch the obsession with scale. Prioritize making a difference, even if it's for just one person. Because in doing so, that impact multiplies.
Remember: Success in business isn’t just about numbers. It's about making a tangible difference, one person at a time.

How to calm down before a big presentation.
Entrepreneurs, have you ever found yourself overwhelmed right before a crucial pitch, presentation, or meeting?
You're not alone.
Stress is a common denominator in the fast-paced world of business. But what if the answer lies in something as basic as your breathing?
It's easy to dismiss.
Breathing is automatic, right?
Yet, when we delve into the science, it's a game-changer.
Stanford research offers a significant insight: Modifying your breathing patterns can have profound physiological effects. Taking slower, deeper breaths activates the parasympathetic nervous system - our body's in-built calming mechanism.
Let's break this down:
Parasympathetic Activation: This system acts as a counterbalance to the sympathetic nervous system, responsible for the 'fight or flight' response. By stimulating the parasympathetic side, we effectively reduce stress markers in the body.
Effects on Blood Sugar and Heart Rate: The same Stanford study found that this breathing technique helps in regulating blood sugar and heart rate. Elevated levels of both are common physiological responses to stress.
Anxiety Reduction: Introducing the Box Breathing method. A technique where you inhale slowly for a count of four, hold the breath for another count of four, and then exhale for the same duration. Just two minutes of this practice can significantly decrease anxiety levels by up to 50%.
It's not just about feeling calm. It's about optimizing your body's response to stressful situations, ensuring you're at your peak performance when it matters most.
In the business world, where decisions often hang on moments, mastering your physiological response can be the edge you need.
In conclusion, while strategies, data, and market analysis are essential tools for any entrepreneur, don't underestimate the science-backed power of controlled breathing.
So, before your next big business challenge, take a moment. Breathe in, hold, breathe out.
Let science do the rest.

Why You Need To Fail | Stephen Petasky
Stephen Petasky has built one of the largest luxury real estate portfolios in the world, and he equates all of his success on his ability to learn from the countless failures he's experienced throughout his career.
Here's how he puts it.
Did you ever build a house of cards? And then watch it tumble down? It's frustrating. But then you learn. You understand the foundation better.
Thomas Edison once remarked, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."
Starting a business? Expect failure. Not as a sign of inadequacy, but as a teacher.
Take Elon Musk. He had rockets explode before successfully launching them. That didn't stop him. It taught him.
Every entrepreneur has a failure story. What differs is how they use it.
Failure is like a gym workout. Heavy. Painful. Yet, it builds stronger muscles.
I've failed. Multiple times. The weight? Tremendous, especially when it's not just your money.
But here's the rub: Fear of failure is worse than failure itself.
Yes, it's cliche. Every motivational post screams, "Don't fear failure!" But it's repeated because it's real.
Gray hairs? Yep, you'll get them them. From mistakes, lessons, and growth.
Each mistake, a lesson. Each lesson, a stepping stone. Each stone, closer to the dream.
Building a business isn't about never falling. It's about standing up, every single time.
So, here's the advice, old yet gold: Embrace failure, not as an end, but as a new, smarter beginning.

In the world of startups, it’s not about fitting the mold, but breaking it.
Sometimes, the weight of experience can be an anchor.
Startups don't need big corporation talent.
Large corporations?
• Predictable.
• Layered.
• Methodical.
Startups?
• Chaotic.
• Lean.
• Passionate.
If you've navigated the corporate sea, you've mastered the map. But startups? They're exploring uncharted waters.
Ever wonder why?
Startups don’t just need a sailor, they need a pirate.
People who challenge the norm.
Who dive headfirst into ambiguity.
Who can pivot on a dime.
Having "Big Corp Inc." on your resume is admirable.
But it's not the golden ticket.
Startups look for:
1. Adaptability over a polished skill set.
2. Curiosity over titles.
3. Resilience over accolades.
It’s about mindset, not brand names.
Consider Elon Musk. No MBA, but he has a ferocious appetite for learning.
Or Julia Hartz, who jumped from MTV to co-founding Eventbrite.
Not traditional paths.
It's not about where you've been, but how you think.
So, for those eyeing a spot in startup wonderland:
Don’t flaunt your corporate badge too brightly.
Instead, showcase:
• Your hunger for new challenges.
• Your joy in unscripted scenarios.
• Your ability to build, break, and rebuild.
In the world of startups, it’s not about fitting the mold, but breaking it.

Luke Van Der Veer | Are You Optimizing For Freedom?
A billionaire sits in a golden office atop a skyscraper. Every resource at his fingertips. But he’s trapped.
Did he optimize for money or freedom?
It's not a black and white question.
"Wealth consists not in having great possessions, but in having few wants." That’s Epictetus, dropping ancient wisdom like breadcrumbs leading us out of a maze.
The startup culture glorifies the hustle. More hours, more money, more everything.
Freedom isn’t the offspring of money. It’s a separate entity.
Entrepreneurs often mistake financial wealth as the golden ticket to freedom.
It’s not.
In the clamor of raising capitals and increasing valuations, The silent whispers of freedom often go unheard.
In the matrix of profit and loss, numbers and data, Excel sheets and PowerPoint slides, there’s a human - yearning not just for wealth, but something more intangible, more liberating.
Freedom.
In the algorithm of life, freedom and money aren’t always directly proportional.
They can be, but it requires intention, not accident.
So, each morning as the sun kisses the world awake, and you plunge into emails, meetings, and the hustle - ask yourself:
Am I optimizing for money or freedom?
Because in the silent echoes of your choices, in the quiet lullabies of your actions, the answer isn’t just heard.
It’s lived.
As you carve your path in the entrepreneurial journey, remember - the golden chains of wealth can be just as binding as the rusted chains of poverty.
In the end, the billionaire in the golden office and the artist with a golden sunset have one thing in common - a choice.
What are you optimizing for?
Make sure when you answer, it’s not just your bank account responding, but your soul nodding in agreement. In this dance of dollars and dreams, ensure it’s not just wealth you’re accumulating but freedom you’re experiencing.
Because at the twilight of existence, it won’t be the money but the moments of unrestrained freedom that will echo the richest melodies of your life.

Remember, it's not about clocking in and out. It's about making every second count.
Did you ever hear about the lumberjack contest? Two lumberjacks – one young and eager, the other older, reserved and more experienced. Their task? Chop down trees. Most trees felled wins.
The younger started with a frenzy. No breaks. Just chop, chop, chop. The elder, he'd chop for an hour, then rest for ten minutes. Surely he'd lose, right?
By day's end, the elder had more trees down. The young one was baffled. "How did you beat me? You took breaks!" The elder replied, "Every time I sat, I sharpened my axe."
Most of us claim, "I'm the hardest worker in the room."
But are you really?
Sitting 10 hours at a desk doesn't equal productivity. Sure, you’re busy. Checking emails. Scrolling LinkedIn. A quick peek at that YouTube tutorial. But are you truly productive?
Take a moment. Ask yourself: Am I really working or just 'axe-dulling' activities?
Contrarian Insight: Busy doesn’t mean effective.
Work done doesn't equate to value produced. Hours logged doesn't reflect real impact made.
Ernest Hemingway was once asked about his writing routine. "I write every morning as soon after first light as possible. There is no one to disturb you and it is cool or cold and you come to your work and warm as you write."
No distractions. Just pure, undiluted focus.
Your challenge isn't the hours you put in. It's what you put into those hours.
If you chase two rabbits, you'll lose them both.
So, what's the trick?
Track your tasks. Analyze where the hours go.
Prioritize. Tackle the big fish. First.
Eliminate distractions. That means mute. Airplane mode. Do not disturb.
And most importantly, take breaks to sharpen your axe.
You'll be amazed. Not just by what you achieve. But by the time you reclaim.
Remember, it's not about clocking in and out. It's about making every second count.

Sustainability isn’t just “nice to have.” It's a strategic move. A competitive edge.
I sat down with Lindsay McCormick, founder of Bite, and she brought up some really important points about sustainability the place it holds in our businesses.
We need to rethink the "extra" box.
Sustainability isn't an afterthought. It's strategic foresight. It's future-proofing. It's smart business.
Action steps:
Supply Chain: Evaluate it. Where are materials sourced? Shift towards sustainability, even if it seems costlier upfront. The payoff in stability is worth it.
Waste Management: Analyze waste. Can it be reduced? Repurposed? Remember, landfills are a PR disaster waiting to happen.
Energy: Go renewable. There's an initial investment, but the long-term savings and potential tax breaks can be significant.
Still need convincing?
Consumer Preference: 66% of global consumers prefer sustainable brands (Nielsen).
Attract Talent: Modern employees prioritize purpose alongside paycheck.
Investor Interest: Ethical investors are on the rise. Be the company they choose.
Consider BlackBerry. They ignored the smartphone shift and faced obsolescence.
Now, sustainability is the shift. Adapt or risk irrelevance.
Incorporating sustainability isn’t just “nice to have.”
It's a strategic move. A competitive edge. Your future relevance depends on it.
When strategizing, don't wonder if you can afford sustainability.
Question if your business can afford to ignore it.

The great equalizer in business is retention, not acquisition.
The great equalizer in business is not when you get one customer, but when you stop one from leaving.
Way more businesses figure out acquisition and forget about retention.
They spend tons of money and time on marketing, sales, and growth hacks, but neglect the most important asset: their existing customers.
They don’t realize that retention is the key to sustainable and profitable growth.
Why?
Because retaining customers is cheaper, easier, and more rewarding than acquiring new ones.
According to a study by Bain & Company, increasing customer retention rates by 5% can increase profits by 25% to 95%.
Retaining customers also means creating loyal advocates who will spread the word about your brand and refer new customers to you.
That’s how you build a flywheel effect that drives organic and exponential growth.
But how do you retain customers?
• By delivering value, delight, and trust at every stage of the customer journey.
• By listening to their feedback, solving their problems, and exceeding their expectations.
• By building relationships, not transactions.
• By treating them like humans, not numbers.
Focus on metrics that matter, you can’t fill a leaky bucket.
Plug those holes and keep those customers from leaving.
It will be the best investment you’ll ever make for your business.

Success isn’t about imitation. It's evolution. Charting your course. While leveraging proven paths.
Walking into the digital world is akin to entering a labyrinth.
Every turn, a different strategy. Every path, a different platform.
But there's a guide. A map.
Success leaves footprints.
Want to dominate today's complex media landscape?
No need to reinvent the wheel.
The leaders? They've left a trail.
Just follow the signs.
Twitter? Check out Matthew Kobach. He’s nailed it.
LinkedIn? Justin Welsh sets the gold standard.
On Instagram, Gary Vaynerchuk isn't just playing – he’s redefining the game.
Podcasting? Let the likes of Lewis Howes and Tom Bilyeu school you.
Why fumble in the dark when there's a flashlight in your hand?
Don’t copy.
Instead, analyze.
Absorb.
Adapt.
Isaac Newton once admitted,
"If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants."
He captured the essence of smart strategy – learn from the best.
Success isn’t about imitation.
It's about evolution.
Charting your course.
While leveraging proven paths.
Learning from leaders doesn't dwarf your progress. It catapults it.
Eager to become the next digital sensation?
• Stay curious.
• Stay observant.
• Be relentless.
The digital realm is ever-changing.
Strategies evolve.
But the core of success? Unchanging.
You've got the blueprint.
Time to build.
Because the next footprint of success? It could be yours.

Uri Levine | Firing Is More Important Than Hiring
Consider this: A successful CEO isn’t the one who just hires well. It's the one who knows when to cut ties.
Let's get real.
Hiring is a CEO's forward-facing move. It's about growth, potential, ambition. But firing? It’s about safeguarding, pruning, optimizing.
Now think about Apple. Steve Jobs didn’t just rebuild Apple by hiring the right folks. He made sweeping changes, dropped non-performers, and shut down lingering projects.
Decisions make leaders. Hesitation breaks them.
When a leader hesitates to fire, it’s not just an individual at stake. It's the morale, culture, and future of the company.
If someone doesn't fit? The team notices. They talk. They question.
And every day that problem persists? It's an endorsement of mediocrity.
By not acting, a CEO says loud and clear: "This is acceptable here."
It’s not just about the individual who isn’t up to the mark. It’s about what their continued presence signals to everyone else.
A CEO's role isn't just strategy and vision. It's intervention. It's action. It's making the hard choices.
In the real world, decisions can't always be wrapped in eloquence. They need clarity, decisiveness, conviction.
So, CEOs out there, remember:
Your impact isn't measured by how many people you bring onboard. It’s determined by the tough decisions you make to ensure you've got the right team.
Because in the end? It’s not about having players on the field. It's about having the right ones.
