What’s Not Fair about Free Trade? | 5-Minute Videos
What benefits the world economy more: government-imposed trade regulations or the free exchange of ideas and commerce? For Daniel Hannan, president of the Institute for Free Trade, freedom always wins.
Script:
Suppose someone invented a pill that let you live to the age of 120 in perfect health, and then die painlessly.
That pill would put a lot of people out of business. It would be bad news for doctors and nurses. It would be catastrophic for medical insurers. It would throw millions of home care staff out of work.
But would anyone see those as good reasons to ban it?
And would anyone care where the pill had been invented? In their country or someone else’s?
What goes for that pill goes for any other product that would improve our lives. We shouldn’t make things harder to obtain simply on the grounds that they originate somewhere else.
Actually, a lot of people disagree with that idea. Opponents of free trade — and there are many — say things that sound perfectly reasonable. Things like:
“We need to protect our strategic industries!”
“We can’t survive these expanding trade deficits!”
“We must grow our own food!”
“We want trade to be fair!”
“We can’t compete with slave-wage economies!”
All those arguments sound like common sense. But all of them would ban our miracle pill. All of them would leave us poorer.
Let’s take them in order.
Protectionism:
Trade barriers don’t protect industries; they make them inefficient, uncompetitive, and dependent on state handouts.
As Ronald Reagan put it:
“Instead of protectionism, we should call it destructionism. It destroys jobs, weakens our industries, harms exports, costs billions of dollars to consumers, and damages our overall economy.”
Trade Deficits:
There is no correlation between a country’s balance of trade and its economic growth.
The greatest benefit of trade is cheaper imports because they save consumers money that then gets spent on other stuff, which is what drives growth.
If, say, China wants to subsidize its steel production, that’s a gift to our construction workers, our car makers, and our consumers, courtesy of the Chinese state.
Growing your own food:
You know which country leads the world in that? North Korea. It has made self-sufficiency — juche — its ruling principle. Yup, that’s North Korea, the world’s leader in manmade famines.
The way to have secure food – or secure anything — is to source it from the widest possible variety of suppliers. That way you are not at risk from a shock or disruption — which might as easily happen in your own country as anywhere else.
Fair Trade:
The only thing that’s fair is not putting the government’s thumb on the scales. Protectionism by definition, privileges some politically connected lobby over the general population. The way to “protect” our industries is to make them more competitive. And you do that by lowering taxes and cutting regulations.
Competing with lower-wage economies:
That’s what makes poor countries richer — and makes rich countries richer. Lower wages let developing nations compete and let wealthier countries focus on higher-skilled, higher-paying jobs. The iPhone is assembled in China, but the design and the profits are in the USA.
Look at the global impact. As recently as 1981, 40 percent of the world’s population lived in extreme poverty. Today it is 8 percent. 300 people have escaped extreme poverty since you clicked on this video. That’s 300 new arguments for free trade.
So why doesn’t everyone get it?

Brazil: A Cautionary Tale | 5-Minute Videos
A few short years ago, Brazil was a vibrant democracy. Today, following a highly disputed election, it looks much different. Paulo Figueiredo, popular Brazilian media commentator, sees some disturbing parallels between his home country and America.
Script:
There’s a nation I dream about.
I want to live there one day.
It is a representative democracy with three branches of government.
It recently had a populist president who rose to power amidst widespread discontent with the ruling left-wing party.
This populist president began to fix many of this nation’s endemic woes.
Its patriotic spirit flourished.
Its economy boomed.
But the left-wing legacy media hated the man who led this revival.
And the entrenched establishment — government bureaucrats, unions, the educational elite — feared him.
They harassed him throughout his first term in office. They forced him to fend off slander after slander, investigation after investigation. And yet, despite their best efforts to derail him, even impeach him, he advanced his agenda.
When new elections rolled around, the president’s enemies saw their chance. They had a plan. Change the election rules to favor their candidate. It worked.
They won — just barely.
Many of the president’s supporters weren’t convinced, however.
Everywhere they looked, they saw fraud. The election was rigged, they said. Others used a harsher word — stolen.
Upon the new president’s inauguration, tens of thousands protested. Some stormed the capital. Many were arrested; many were thrown in prison.
But the now former president refused to fade away. This infuriated the new left-wing regime. They accused him of inciting the rioters. Using the courts, they tried to bankrupt him, remove him from the ballot, and imprison him — anything to stop him from returning to power.
The nation I have described is… Brazil.
It’s my home country. My roots go very deep. In fact, my grandfather was the President of Brazil from 1979 to 1985.
I was the host of Brazil’s top-rated political TV show. I had 5 million followers on social media. In the election of 2018, I supported the populist candidate Jair Bolsonaro. I supported him again in 2022 against a left-wing opponent, Lula da Silva.
Da Silva, or Lula as he is commonly known, is a committed socialist. He and his party ran the country from 2003 to 2016. During that time, Brazil faced the worst economy in a century. Corruption, which was always a problem, got even worse.
In 2017, Lula was convicted of money laundering and bribery. He was sentenced to 9 years in prison. But in 2021, Brazil’s Supreme Court, which Lula and his allies had packed with leftists, invalidated his conviction.
So now Lula was free to run for office again. Having trashed the country once, he was ready for a second go.
The media and the bureaucracy backed him all the way.
But that wasn’t Lula’s greatest asset. He had control of the electoral process which in Brazil is fully electronic and centralized. The man running this process, Alexandre de Moraes, was a sworn enemy of Bolsonaro.
The fix was in.

The Fallen Soldier | 5-Minute Videos
Others have made the ultimate sacrifice so that you could be free. Remember them—today, and always. A moving tribute, written and narrated by former Navy SEAL and author Jocko Willink.
Script:
I am the fallen soldier, sailor, airman, and Marine.
Remember me.
I am the one that held the line. Sometimes I volunteered. Sometimes I went because I was told to go.
But when the nation called—I answered.
In order to serve, I left behind the family, friends, and freedom that so many take for granted.
Over time, I used different weapons: a sword, a musket, a bayonet, a rifle, a machine gun.
Often, I marched into battle on foot. Other times, I rode to battle on horseback or in wagons; sometimes on trains; later in tanks or Jeeps or Humvees.
In early wars, my ships were made of wood and powered by the wind. Later they were made of steel and powered by diesel fuel or the atom. I even took to the air and mastered the sky in planes, helicopters, and jets. The machines of war evolved and changed with the times.
But remember that it was always me—the warrior—that had to fight our nation’s enemies.
I fought at Lexington and Concord as our nation was born.
I crossed the Delaware on Christmas Day in 1776.
In the Civil War, I fought with my brothers—and against my brothers—at Gettysburg and Shiloh and Bull Run. I learned that we must never again divide.
In World War l, I marched on the Marne and held the line at Belleau Wood. "The war to end all wars," they called it. I just called it "hell."
In World War ll, I fought everywhere: the beaches of Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, the hell of Guadalcanal. I stood against tyranny and kept darkness from consuming the world.
In Korea, I landed at Inchon and broke out of the Chosin Reservoir. They called it "the forgotten war"—but I never forgot.
In Vietnam, I fought in the Mekong Delta, at Khe Sanh and Hamburger Hill. Some say my country wavered. But I did not waver. Ever.
In the recent past, I have fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. In Baghdad, Fallujah, and Ramadi. In Kunar, Helmand, and Kandahar.
As technology advanced, I used night vision goggles and global positioning systems and drones and lasers and thermal optics.

Clarence Thomas on Courage | 5-Minute Videos
In your life, you will face difficult challenges: personal, professional, even spiritual. How will you deal with them? Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States Clarence Thomas offers some pertinent advice to the next generation in PragerU’s 2024 commencement address.
Script:
Justice Clarence Thomas:
Class of 2024, it is an honor to address you. Though I completed my formal education many years ago, I think there are some things that endure despite the passage of time. Courage is one of those things.
As Winston Churchill wrote almost a century ago, “Courage is rightly esteemed the first of human qualities because…it is the quality which guarantees all others.”
In your young lives, you will face challenges: personal, professional, even spiritual. How will you deal with them?
I encourage you to think of the people in your lives who have shown courage in the face of adversity and challenges.
When I think of the people in my own life who demonstrated courage, I think first and foremost of my grandfather, the greatest man I have ever known. At the beginning of my career here in Washington, D.C., I sought his advice and counsel.
It was during my first encounters with the onslaught of criticism and public attacks. I asked my grandfather how I should handle it. His words were as wise as they were pithy: "Son, you have to stand up for what you believe in."
Over the years, I have seen those who know what is right, but who are afraid to stand up when it would cost them. We all know it is right to stand up for a friend who is being bullied. But, how many of us will choose to say nothing out of fear? It takes courage to do something despite the risks.
No wonder my good friend Dennis Prager likes to say, “Courage is the rarest of…human traits.”
Courage also comes into play as we deal with ourselves, with our problems or faults. It takes courage to be honest with ourselves. It is so much easier and convenient to blame our shortcomings or problems on someone (or something) else. It takes courage to be honest and to do as Alexander Solzhenitsyn said: “Live not by lies.” Or put more positively: “Live a life of truth and honesty.”
From time to time, I have reflected on the people who were the most important in my own life and taught me much about courage. My grandparents are the first in my thoughts. But there were others.

Every single death in Gaza is attributable to Hamas, not Israel—just as every dead German was because of the Nazis and Hitler, and every dead Japanese was due to the fascist regime in Japan during WWII. In both cases, the day Germany and Japan surrendered, the bombing stopped. The same is true today. If Hamas surrendered, not one more bomb would be dropped.

Harry Truman: Containing Communism | 5-Minute Videos
Harry Truman led America to victory in World War II, but a new challenge was looming: the spread of communism across the globe. Would America’s 33rd president retreat into isolation, or fight the new threat head-on? Elizabeth Spalding, senior fellow at Pepperdine University School of Public Policy, describes his decision and what it cost him.
Script:
Upon learning of Franklin Roosevelt’s death on April 12, 1945, Harry Truman was reported to have said, “I felt like the moon, the stars, and all the planets had fallen on me.”
It was only a slight exaggeration.
The decisions the 33rd president had to make in just the next four months would have crushed any normal person.
Managing the German surrender in May 1945, authorizing the use of the atomic bomb to end the war in the Pacific in August, and converting the economy from wartime to peacetime are just a sample of what he had to contend with.
It was also becoming clear that the Soviet Union was not going to be a partner in the postwar world. It was going to be an adversary bent on world domination.
Truman wasn’t about to let this happen.
The first order of business was to save Western Europe. Eastern Europe was already gone.
As Winston Churchill vividly described in March 1946, “...an iron curtain has descended across the Continent.”
Truman agreed with Churchill, committing the United States to containing the Soviet threat. This became known as the Truman Doctrine.
Around the same time, Truman’s most trusted advisor, Secretary of State George Marshall, returned from Europe deeply concerned. He found Germany in ruins, England bankrupt, and France and Italy in chaos. Marshall reported it would take an unprecedented effort by the United States to breathe life into a moribund European economy. Failure to do so would hand over the Continent to the Soviets.
Truman authorized $13 billion in economic aid, a phenomenal figure for the time. This became known as the Marshall Plan. And indeed, it accomplished its goal: the recovery of Europe, thwarting Soviet expansionism.
In May 1948, a new crisis emerged: a war was raging between the Arabs and the Jews. The UN was looking for a solution. The question before Truman: should the United States recognize the new state of Israel?
Marshall argued “No.” It would further antagonize Arab states. But Truman saw a moral issue – the Jews had suffered enough over the centuries, most especially in the recent Holocaust – as well as a Biblical and historical issue – this was the Jews’ ancient homeland.
Thanks to Truman, on May 14, 1948, America became the first country to recognize the Jewish state.

Harry Truman: Dropping the Bomb | 5-Minute Videos
When Harry Truman suddenly became president, World War II was reaching its climax. He was soon confronted with one of the biggest decisions any president would ever have to make. Elizabeth Spalding, senior fellow at Pepperdine University School of Public Policy, tells the story of America’s pivotal 33rd president.
Script:
Who was Harry Truman?
The American people didn’t really know.
He had been vice president for all of 82 days.
And now, on April 12, 1945, upon Franklin Roosevelt’s death, Truman had become the 33rd president of the United States, the commander in chief of the biggest army in the world, in the biggest war in history, and about to make some of the biggest decisions any president would ever make.
“Is there anything I can do for you?” Truman asked the late president’s wife Eleanor upon his arrival at the White House to take the oath of office.
“Is there anything we can do for you, Harry? For you are the one in trouble now."
Harry Truman was born on May 8, 1884, in a small farm village in southwestern Missouri. His values — faith, hard work, and common sense — came from the middle of the middle of America. It’s the key to understanding this straightforward, but complex man.
He never finished college – not because he wasn’t capable -- he was a voracious reader of history, biography, and the classics – but because his family needed his income, and family loyalty always came first.
He expected to be a farmer, just like his father and his father’s father.
But that path changed in April 1917, when the United States entered World War I. Truman, then 33, enlisted.
Truman commanded an artillery battery. His unerring tactical instinct and coolness under fire earned him the respect of his men. That loyalty never faded. The friendships he made during the war lasted a lifetime.
Truman returned home transformed: more confident, more worldly, and more ambitious. Now that he had seen Paris, he wasn’t going back to the farm.
In 1919, he married his hometown sweetheart, Elizabeth “Bess” Wallace. That same year, he opened a men’s clothing store with an army friend, Eddie Jacobson.
After a successful first year, the enterprise failed when the country fell into a postwar recession. Truman refused to declare bankruptcy, though he was almost $20,000 in debt. It took him 13 years to pay it back.
During this period, Truman came to the attention of Tom Pendergast, the powerful Democratic Party boss of Kansas City. Pendergast recognized a natural politician when he saw one.
Truman rose from county judge in 1923 to U.S. senator in 1935. So close was his association with his political patron that his opponents mocked him as “the senator from Pendergast.”
Once again, it was a world war that transformed him. He turned the chairmanship of an obscure committee into a national platform. It was officially known as the Senate Special Committee to Investigate the National Defense Program, but everyone called it the Truman Committee.
Its purpose was to investigate waste and incompetence in the war effort—and there turned out to be a lot. By forcing defense contractors to meet minimum quality standards, Truman not only saved taxpayers billions but saved thousands of lives.
In 1944, President Roosevelt, despite his failing health, sought a fourth term. He wanted to see the war to its end. To win what promised to be a close election, the party bosses felt FDR needed a new running mate. They worried that the current vice president, Henry Wallace, with his very progressive views, would turn off moderate voters.
The moderate, midwestern Truman, buoyed by the positive press from his committee work, seemed to be an ideal fit.
Wallace was out. Truman was in.
That fall, the Roosevelt-Truman ticket won handily.
FDR barely acknowledged Truman’s existence, sharing nothing about war strategy—and nothing about the development of a new secret weapon, the atomic bomb.
And then Roosevelt died.
