Right to Work
Join Empower U and Greg R. Lawson from the Buckeye Institute who will enlighten us on policy issues including local Right to Work. In 2014, Greg wrote an editorial, Ohioans have earned the right to work. He gives a compelling argument for joining states like Michigan and Kentucky in passing Right-to-Work.
Has Ohio Earned the Right to Work?
Greg will explain policy priorities that shape Ohio’s economic and regulatory environment and will make our state attractive to businesses and jobs that secure a brighter future for all Ohioans. This year, Ohio has an opportunity to make great strides enacting legislation that will help us compete with neighboring states.
Greg will discuss recent policy “wins” as well as the reforms currently moving through Ohio’s legislature, including the massive state budget. Jobs, education, energy policy and business regulation are among several areas ripe for reform.

Electrical Grid Vulnerablities
We have all probably experienced short electrical blackouts lasting minutes or hours after a storm, but what are the chances of a much longer one? Are storms the only major threat to the electrical grid? Can we always count on utilities to quickly restore power? What preparations should we make?
Michael Patton will outline what he sees as possible major threats to the electrical grid in the Cincinnati area: weather, human error, massive solar flare with coronal mass ejection, physical attack, electromagnetic pulse, fuel shortages, and hacking. He will estimate the possible time to recover from a realistic worst case for each. Spoiler alert: he is not a “doomer.” At the end he will suggest preparations which do not involve moving to a mountain in Idaho.

Saying Goodbye to Vietnam with Ken Williamson
Fifty years ago, in 1969, Ken Williamson went to Vietnam as a U.S. Army photographer. Armed with a BFA degree in photography and an old Leica camera, Ken began his journey to document the activities of the Army Engineers as he traveled throughout South Vietnam as an Army Photojournalist. Hoping one day to publish a book about his experience, he used the opportunity to also capture the beauty of the country and the struggle of the Vietnamese people to survive the horrors of war. Following two return trips to Vietnam in 1998 and 2005, Ken published “Saying Goodbye to Vietnam”.
Ken will present an engaging story of how he documented Army Engineer activities for three publications, struggled with thoughts of why our country had a military presence in Vietnam, and dealt with thoughts of his pregnant wife living halfway around the world without him. Hear and see what life was like as a photographer in a combat zone and learn what Ken discovered about Vietnam during his two return trips. From developing film in lake water, to capturing daily events under the most challenging tropical conditions, you’ll experience Vietnam at war and at peace through Ken’s words and photographs. He will read excerpts from his book, including letters between Nixon and Ho Chi Minh, poetry he wrote during his 1998 trip to help with his healing process, and share the experience of meeting a former Viet Cong soldier who was left in a field to die.

Federalism and Supremacy
Can state and local governments just say “no” to federal law?
