South Africa - Cape Town - 3 July 2023 - NSRI rescue swimmers retrieving the body of a paraglider. A tandem paraglider got entangled and crashed in the ocean along the Sea Point promenade. One of the two paragliders lost his life in the accident. NSRI rescue swimmers retrieved the body that was still entangled in the parachute cords. he Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Ms Barbara Creecy in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) visited plastic waste treatment plants in honor of World Environment Day.
This year’s WED is aimed at seeking innovative ways to end plastic pollution. Plastic pollution is now a global problem with an estimated 353 million tonnes of plastic waste produced in a year and finding itself polluting our oceans because of its durability and taking a much longer time to disintegrate.
To mark World Environment Day 2023, Minister Creecy embarked on a tour of two recycling plants in Cape Town that are supported through Producer Responsibility Organisations – POLYCO and PETCO to gain further insight into the benefits of Extended Producer Responsibility in support of plastic recycling.

Cape Town, 05 June 2023. Naftal Zandamela, the man accused of killing Warren Rhoode makes his first appearance in the Bellville Magistrate's Court. The 41-year-old man is set to face charges for the murder of Warren Rhoode, the son of Major-General Wally Rhoode, who serves as President Cyril Ramaphosa's head of security. Warren Rhoode had been missing for two weeks after visiting a friend in Delft, Cape Town, before his lifeless body was discovered on April 22. The Hawks, South Africa's priority crime investigation unit, conducted an extensive investigation into Rhoode's disappearance and subsequent murder. Their diligent work led to the arrest of a Mozambican national in Thubelisha, Delft. The suspect was taken into custody for questioning by detectives specializing in serious and violent crimes.
